In the late 1960’s 18 individuals from
the eastern suburbs of St. Paul decided that a new private country
club should be built in the area. They purchased 400 acres of beautiful
wooded, gently rolling land dotted with ponds from a local farmer
in the city of Grant, a sparsely settled suburb just west of Stillwater.
In addition to the golf course, the original developers offered
60 home sites for sale, most of which bordered the links.
Don Herfort, a local architect, was hired to design
the course. He was assisted by Gerald Mogren, a land contractor and
developer from Maplewood who spearheaded the development for the
owners group. Mr. Mogren was skilled in heavy equipment operations
and did much of the shaping of the ground for the project. He was
also in the sod business which meant large areas of the course would
be sodded instead of seeded which was the usual method when building
a golf course.
Construction was started in 1968 and 12 holes were ready for play
by the Fall of 1970. Prospective members could play for free as long
as they brought back many loose rocks in the bag that was provided
them.
By Spring of 1971 a beautiful course sodded mainly
with Kentucky Bluegrass awaited the new members. Two types of memberships
were available. One was to pay a $75.00 fee and then pay a green
fee for each round played. This was going to be available for
one year only. The other type of membership was a full membership,
either single or family which cost a one time fee of $450.00, most
of which was refundable if one left the Club. Annual dues in the
amount of $350.00 were an additional charge. Many families were excited
to try this beautiful new private golf club on the East side of town.
Over the years Indian Hills has been proud to host

13 owners.
